An easy introduction to off-road cycling on a 10- to 12-mile loop using a combination of gravel roads, fire roads, rail trails, and easy single track in Rutland State Park and the Barre Falls Dam area. Amount of single track will depend upon trail conditions. Fat tires required; suspension recommended but not mandatory. A shortcut is available (8.5 miles) if you find yourself in too deep. Expect "hike-a-bike" in a few spots. For those who didn't get enough thrills, a short (0.9-mile) single track loop from the parking area after the main ride is available to test your bike handling skills. Meet at the Rutland State Park parking area just before the parking lot for the swimming beach. The park entrance is on Route 122A about half a mile from Route 122. Park any place on the right when you see the swimming pond on your left. Rain cancels the ride.

Patriots Day
Activity: Show n Go road ride, 28 miles with stops
for breakfast and Boston Marathon
Location: Westboro Shopping Center, Route 9 & Lyman Street,
Westboro
Time: 9:30 a.m.
Show n Go means no leader. Print out your own cue sheet (www.sevenhillswheelmen.org/cuesheet/patriots.htm) and just show up! Start time is 9:30 sharp so we have plenty of time for breakfast at mile 8 on our route at Mels Sunnyside in Ashland; bring a lock, and its helpful when its time to split the check if you have some singles, not just a $20 bill. We leave Mels by 11:30 a.m. to get to our prime marathon viewing spot on the Framingham-Ashland line (approximately mile 5 for the runners) in time to see the wheelchair racers, who precede the runners. After most of the runners go by, we bike a big loop back to Westboro, for a total of 28 bike miles for the day. No heartbreaking hills.

The Brookfield-Hardwick Ramble (cue sheet at www.sevenhillswheelmen.org/cuesheet/brookfil.htm), with an optional shortcut that skips West Brookfield, Gilbertville and Hardwick Common. Were guessing at the distance of the short option but we think itll be about 31 miles.

We'll help the Columbus Park Neighborhood Association pick up litter by Coes Pond and the Knights of Columbus hall. Wear work gloves. Trash bags will be provided. Refreshments will be served. This cleanup coincides with dozens of cleanups across the city coordinated by the Regional Environmental Council.
DIRECTIONS: From Park Ave., turn onto Lovell Street at Friendly's. From Lovell Street, go 3/4 around the little rotary onto Englewood Ave. At the end, instead of going straight into Knights of Columbus entrance, take a left and continue on that road (Circuit Ave. North) all the way to the end. #76 is the house that's second from the end, on the right. If you hit Coes Pond, you've gone too far.
